Creating and nurturing new technology entrepreneurs is the goal of The Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE), a new interdisciplinary center in the College of Business and the College of Engineering.
The CITE will create a pipeline for UTSA faculty, students and the surrounding business community to develop new technology ventures. One of our goals for the center is to help unlock the entrepreneur in both faculty and students through education and experiential activities. The center has conducted the New Technology Venture Start-up Competition, innovative student projects that partner undergraduate engineering students with business undergraduate students in the Entrepreneurship program. The top three teams win cash prizes, get the opportunity to pitch their idea to a venture panel, and ultimately receive the opportunity to launch their company.
Beginning Fall 2009, the Harvard Business Club of San Antonio will participate in the venture competition preparation as mentors. . Student teams participating in the Tech Competition would have access to mentors. The mentors would work with the student teams to review their concepts and plans. The mentorship program is available after the competition to those teams whose technology has strong commercialization potential.
A technology entrepreneur is an individual that undertakes the establishment and operation of a new business venture that is based on the use of a key underlying technology, which in itself is founded on science and engineering. These underlying technologies lend themselves to the creation
of new products or to the delivery and execution of new services. Technological innovation is the foundation for creating new enterprises, and the spirit of entrepreneurship is the catalyst for turning these innovations into reality. Through a process of education, experiences, resources, and support, the Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is focused on fostering the growth of new technology-based ventures.
